What's Up Wednesday!

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme, started by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk, geared to help readers and writers touch base and let them know what's up. If you want join in, you can find the link widget on Jaime's and Erin's blogs!

What I'm Reading
I finished Rick Yancey's The Five Wave last night! It's one of those books that I couldn't put down, even when I was eating or watching The Voice or playing with Otto. My nose = Stuck in my Kindle. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Fast paced, clean writing, strong characters, and an interesting take on aliens. It doesn't quite live up to its comparison to The Hunger Games—I had a much stronger emotional connection to THG—but I'd definitely recommend The Fifth Wave!

What I'm Writing
Still working on my YA space western! I've been toying with changing the voice from first present to third past, but I think the former might win out. Maybe. I don't know! Ask me again tomorrow.

What's Inspiring Me Right Now
My little nephew Sean! One of my new favorite things is watching Sean play with my father. My dad, who is a quiet and stoic sort of guy, simply lights up whenever this baby is around!

What Else I've Been Up To
With my brother's family visiting from Taiwan, I've been delving back into photography again. I love snapping pictures of my little nephew and trying to get better behind the lens. One day, I'd love to upgrade to a full frame camera—maybe a Canon Mark II or a Nikon D3—but these babies are so pricey. One day maybe!

  1. What a great photo! You've captured such a great shot of your dad and nephew. Seriously adorable. :-) You're the second person today who has mentioned THE 5TH WAVE. I think I'll definitely have to get my hands on a copy. When you mention your space western, I think Firefly, and then I think "This book needs to get published ASAP so I can read it!" Sounds awesome! :D

    1. Aw, thank you so much, Jaime! I really hope this space western gets published! Haha, if only my hoping could guarantee that. :)

How is your WIP coming along?

  2. Honestly, I was kind of uninterested in The 5th Wave until I started hearing about it all this week - about how good and exciting it is. I put it on hold at my library yesterday, so hopefully I can pick it up soon. So excited to dive in. I need a fast read. :)

LOVE that pic of your dad and nephew. Sean is sooooo adorable!

    1. You'll have so much sci-fi in your TBR pile with The Fifth Wave and Ender's Game! I'm so excited to hear what you think about them. :)

  3. I might have to read THE FIVE WAVE. I think I'm doing an interesting take on aliens in my WIP, so if someone else has an interesting take on aliens... I'm interested! Especially if it's as compelling as you say. :) And I hear you on voice. I fought for a while over whether to write my WIP in first person or third. Third would be a lot easier... so I ended up going with first! :D

    1. Yay for books about aliens! I'm a huge sci-fi nerd so I'm always intrigued by books with extraterrestrials.

Also, good for you for choosing to write in first person when writing in third would have been easier! Ah, the things we do for writing. :)

  6. This is the second person in just a few days who has blogged about The Fifth Wave. Sounds like it must be added to the TBR!

And love the picture! I get inspired by own children all the time.

  7. You're writing a YA space western? That's awesome! I'm a huge fan of FIREFLY so that sounds very appealing to me. This is the second time today I've heard someone mention THE 5TH WAVE. Definitely adding that one to my TBR list. Also, I love the picture of your nephew. So adorable!

    1. I *love* Firefly too! I'm still in mourning that it didn't last longer.

I would definitely recommend The 5th Wave! I gobbled it up in one night.

Also, you look so much like your dad!

    1. Aw, that is so nice of you to say, Kelly! Thank you!!!

Haha, I do look like my dad! When I was growing up, my parent's friends would look at me and say, "You look like your dad." Then they'd look at my brother and say, "And he looks just like your mom." Guess that hasn't changed!
