Jennifer Lawrence = Katniss Everdeen! What do you think?

If you missed the news yesterday, Jennifer Lawrence has been cast as Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games. It seems like this choice has already caused a firestorm across the web.

She's too old!
Too blonde!
Her boobs are too big!

Admittedly, I have a few reservations about Jen. I mean, she does seem a bit old for the role, right? By the time Mockingjay gets made into a movie, she might be 23 or older. And Katniss is only seventeen or eighteen in that book! (Additionally, Jen does seem a bit, uh, buxom, for the role. I've always envisioned Katniss as very slender, very thin. Very flat-chested. Ah well.)

Despite my reservations, I'm actually pretty excited about this casting! I watched Winter's Bone with Justin a couple months ago and I thought Jennifer did a fantastic job in it. She really captured her role as a struggling Appalachian teen trying to keep her family together--and this role is pretty reminiscent to the role of Katniss. I'm just grateful that the director Gary Ross chose a girl who can act.

Speaking of Gary Ross, I really loved this interview he did with Entertainment Weekly about why he chose Jennifer for the role. He and Suzanne Collins worked together very closely in choosing their Katniss:

[Jennifer] came in and read for me and it just knocked me out. I don’t want to go into too many details, but we did a scene from the movie and it was so amazingly powerful that it was sort of stunning. You glimpsed every aspect of the role and the potential of the whole movie.

But that's just my opinion. What do you think about this decision? Who were you rooting for to play Katniss? Hailee Steinfeld? Chloe Moretz? Finally, I found this picture of Jennifer as a brunette. Does this help make her case at all?

  1. I'm really happy they went with someone who can act. And obviously she can dye her hair brown and wear contacts. My only concern is that she looks old (older than 20) and is very curvy. I always imagined Katniss with a flat chest, too. And she's basically starving so I imagined her really tiny. As long as they can get rid of Jennifer's boobs (duct tape?) I think she'll look great.

And, above all, I think the acting matters most.

  2. She doesn't look much like Katniss in my opinion (a bit too old and curvy for a half-starved girl who's one of the smallest people in the game), but I'm happy with her casting, especially if she can act.

  3. Don't mind who they pick if they can bring the character to life. Wasn't there some kind of uproar when Cedric Diggory was first cast as Vampy Ed?

I haven't seen Winter's Bone yet, but if it's as good as you say I might have to.

  4. I think acting skills is the most important thing here. I worry about the same things everyone else has already voiced, but with some amazing acting (and makeup/wardrobe/etc), it may not even matter. Only time will tell.. :)

  5. Tracey and Emy, yeah I totally agree! I always envisioned Katniss to be very small and lean but Jennifer Lawrence is a lot more womanly. But I think (I hope) she'll do a great job in the role.

Ian, I think my husband liked Winter's Bone more than I did. I thought the movie was kind of slow but I really admired Jennifer Lawrence in the role!

Erin, agreed! Only time will tell. I'm relieved though that Suzanne Collins seems so on board--that makes me feel like Jennifer will be a good Katniss even though she might not look like the character.

  6. They can do wonders with a little hair dye and makeup. It's the acting that matters to me, and it sounds like she's great. If we can't trust Suzanne's opinion, then this is getting a little ridiculous, don't you think?

  8. I'll just admit to being ecstatic that casting is happening and everything is moving forward. I love, love, love this series and can't wait for the movie.

  9. No times a billion! I'm sure she's a wonderful actress, but I'm sure they could've found someone who naturally looked like Katniss that could act as well. She actually looks older than 20--that'll be a TON of movie magic. Okay, I'm done being mean...I still wouldn't mind checking out Winter's Bone. Just don't know how I feel about seeing this movie now.

  10. I think she'll do great! I agree with Ian. Critics panned R-Patz when he was cast. No one wanted Tom C. for Lestat. But, after the movie came out, opinions changed :) It'll probably be the same this time!

  11. Hey there! :D
Well, I think I'm with the majority here... I don't like her for Katniss, but there's a reason she got picked, right? Also I think the brunette pic just changed my mind! :D

On another note, You know what I thought was funny? (I'm weird, let me warn you first, lol) You're my 88th follower and I'm your 108th follower, and my favorite number is 8! LOL

At least it's not Selena Gomez or someone like her. Some people thought she should play the role I mean seriously. I just hope it's not like the Percy Jackson movie were the books good, but the movie sucks.
